Joanna co-founded the real estate development company Hess Callahan Partners with Mike Hess in 2016. Before Hess Callahan Partners, Joanna and Mike were an integral part of First Western Development Services where Joanna was in-house Legal Counsel.  Beyond her duties as in-house Legal counsel, she also worked on most aspects of development with a focus on lease review, project financing, and the closing of sales and acquisitions. Joanna’s recent projects include two Fremont Office buildings for Tableau, and a mixed-use restoration in Portland for Seattle-based retailer evo (Winner of the 2016 DeMuro Award presented by Restore Oregon for one of Oregon’s best restoration projects). Joanna holds a B.A. from Yale University, a Master of Science in Public Policy from the London School of Economics, and a law degree from the University of Washington School of Law.

Mike Hess and Joanna Callahan formed Hess Callahan Partners in 2016, after many successful years at First Western Development Services.   The company's aim is to develop a portfolio of financially successful, architecturally distinct, and environmentally sustainable properties in Seattle’s urban core with a focus on redevelopment and new construction

Through Hess Callahan's partnership with CoU LLC, it has received many accolades from winning NAIOP's 2017 Washington Office Building of the Year to being awarded "Hero of the Salmon" for its Salmon safe certified projects in Seattle.

Mike has nearly 35 years of experience in the development industry.  After studying Economics at the University of Washington, Mike started his development career in banking with Walter E. Heller and Co. from 1979-1981. In 1981 Mike joined First Western Development. Between 1981 and present, Mike has been a Partner at First Western Development Services where he has been involved in all aspects of commercial development and building management. Mike’s areas of expertise include proforma analysis, project financing, leasing and management.
